Rustenburg is the Capital of the Bojanala Platinum region of South Africa’s North West Province, the city of Rustenburg is known for its rich history as well as its rich minerals and soils. Rustenburg also boasts the beautiful surroundings of the Pilanesberg and Magaliesberg Mountain Ranges.
It was a FIFA Soccer World Cup 2010 host city, and is home to the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, named after the richest tribe of South Africa.
The Royal Bafokeng tribe are still ruled by their King (also vice chouncelor of North-West Province Universties) Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi. With the majestic beauty surrounding Rustenburg, it’s understandable why it has become a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of nearby cities such as Johannesburg. Rustenburg’s enviable position as the hub of the mining industry in Northern South Africa has led in recent years to a rapid economic expansion, and today it is reported to be the fastest growing city in South Africa. The two largest platinum mines in the world and the largest platinum refinery are situated within Rustenburg; additionally the region contains large reserves of asbestos, tin, chrome, lead, marble, granite and slate. As a result of the mining, Rustenburg has seen a high level of investment into social development, which has seen the standard of life for its once relatively poor local residents improve dramatically in recent years. The Greater Rustenburg Community Foundation was established to ensure that all levels of society in this area benefit materially from the wealth generated there.
